Job Description

Location: Covent Garden, London

Permanent, full time

Closing date: June 1, 2025

This role offers an opportunity to be part of the inaugural brewery team for Guinness Open Gate Brewery, London (GOGBL), a 15 HL experimental brewery and consumer experience site under construction. The initial focus will be on laboratory and brewery start-up activities. The QA Manager will collaborate with lab equipment suppliers and technicians to install, calibrate, and stock lab supplies. The role also involves working with Guinness global quality standards, developing SOPs, and conducting baseline microbiological and analytical tests during brewery commissioning.

Additional Details

GOGBL is located on a historic brewing site in Covent Garden, featuring a brewery, consumer experience areas, retail stores, event spaces, and restaurants. The team includes senior brewers and brewers reporting to the Head of Site Operations.

Purpose of Role

The QA Manager will ensure beer quality and sensory standards are met, conduct quality processes, and maintain lab equipment. The role also involves food safety and HACCP responsibilities, supporting the brewery’s reputation for quality and safety, and fostering an inclusive environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead safety initiatives across the brewery.
  • Maintain SOPs and hazard assessments.
  • Conduct sampling, testing, and recording of chemical, microbiological, and sensory data.
  • Perform analytical and microbiological testing on beer and raw materials.
  • Set up sensory panels and conduct fermentation tests.
  • Participate in yeast health management and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain laboratory standards, supplies, and equipment calibration.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and food safety regulations.
  • Collaborate on quality issues to ensure proper resolution.
Qualifications and Experience
  • At least 3+ years in laboratory work, preferably in brewing or microbiology.
  • Certification in brewing, microbiology, chemical engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience with lab start-up and commissioning is preferred.
  • Strong data evaluation and quality testing skills.
  • Knowledge of beer defects, HACCP, GMPs, and sensory analysis is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Long periods of standing, walking, climbing, and handling heavy objects up to 25kg are required. Work involves exposure to temperature variations, noise, pressurized systems, chemicals, and machinery. Weekend and holiday work may be necessary.
