Job Purpose

To ensure all incoming Raw Materials, Intermediates, and Finished Products meet the pre-set specifications in a timely manner by efficiently managing Quality Control Technicians and Senior Technicians.

Quality Control Supervisor - PPG Architectural Coatings UK Limited

Location: Birstall

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the quality control of all batches of Raw Materials, Intermediates, and Finished Products within the QC laboratory.
• Ensure measurement of materials follows prescribed SOPs and Test Methods.
• Accurately report all results and findings.
• Establish corrective actions for non-conforming products and make final acceptance decisions for weekly production worth £159 million annually.
• Oversee procurement of laboratory consumables cost-effectively.
• Handle rejection of non-conforming materials and ensure proper documentation via CAIR reports.

Key Accountabilities

• Ensure adequate QC staffing covering factory hours, including weekends.
• Record non-conformances and undertake corrective actions promptly.
• Examine and test all batches against specifications, analyze non-conformities, and implement corrective actions per ISO 9001 standards.
• Investigate and report on manufacturing batches, recommend remedial actions, and liaise with relevant departments.
• Manage rework stock and report progress monthly to minimize stock levels.
• Maintain a clean, safe working environment, manage 5S audits, and improve scores.
• Oversee QC staff training and development, including staff appraisals.
• Recommend CAPEX for new equipment and oversee procurement of consumables.
• Ensure calibration and maintenance of lab equipment and uphold H&S standards.
• Introduce ATP testing, organize effluent plant testing, and update BCP plans annually.

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree in Chemistry or related field.
• At least 5 years in the paint or related industry, preferably in a supervisory role or with management qualification.
• Attain BPI Accelerator status.
• Normal colour vision and good colour evaluation skills.
• Knowledge of Paint Technology and Manufacturing Methods.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Overtime may be required outside normal hours.

Additional Features

• Responsible for acceptance and concession of finished products and raw materials.
• Assist in recruitment and issue work permits following procedures.
• Advise on check weighing issues and product-related problems.
