Job summary

Coleman James is seeking an experienced Quality Engineer / Quality Manager for Groundworks and Civil Engineering projects in Bedlington, United Kingdom. The role combines site inspections (approx. 40%) with quality management, documentation, audits, NCR handling and liaison with main contractor teams.

You will establish quality plans, inspections, ITPs, and hold points to prevent defects and ensure compliance throughout construction, promoting a right-first-time approach on site.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement and maintain the Company's Quality Plan and project-specific quality requirements.
• Review contract specifications, drawings, scopes of work and Employer's Requirements to identify applicable quality standards.
• Ensure site activities comply with project specifications, approved drawings, RAMS, ITPs and relevant standards.
• Establish the required inspection and testing regime before works commence.
• Ensure appropriate quality controls are in place to prevent defects and non-conforming work.
• Monitor quality performance across projects and identify recurring issues, trends and opportunities for improvement.
• Ensure quality procedures and project requirements are clearly communicated to site management, supervisors and operatives.
• Carry out site inspections to verify that works are being constructed correctly and in accordance with approved information.
• Inspect works at appropriate stages before subsequent works cover or conceal them.
• Verify workmanship, dimensions, levels, tolerances, materials and installation requirements.
• Confirm that required inspections and testing have been completed before works progress.
• Identify potential quality issues at an early stage and work with site teams to rectify them before they become defects.
• Record inspections accurately, including photographic evidence where required.
• Carry out final inspections and quality checks prior to handover.
• Maintain a visible site presence and promote a "right first time" approach to construction.
• Prepare, review and maintain ITPs for groundworks and civil engineering activities.
• Identify appropriate hold points, witness points and inspection points.
• Ensure ITPs are understood and implemented by site teams.
• Ensure inspections are undertaken at the correct stages of construction.
• Coordinate inspections with the Main Contractor, client, consultant and other relevant parties.
• Ensure inspection records are fully completed, signed and traceable.
• Monitor ITP compliance and address missing or incomplete inspection records.
• Identify and record non-conforming work.
• Raise and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs).
• Coordinate corrective actions with site management and relevant stakeholders.
• Investigate the root cause of significant or recurring quality issues.
• Monitor NCRs through to satisfactory close-out.
• Ensure corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
• Analyse recurring NCRs and defects to identify trends and recommend improvements to working practices.

Quality Engineer / Quality Manager - Groundworks & Civil Engineering

Role Purpose

We are seeking an experienced Quality Engineer / Quality Manager to manage and maintain quality standards across our groundworks and civil engineering projects.

The primary purpose of the role is to prevent defects by ensuring the correct quality processes, inspections and testing are established and followed throughout construction, rather than relying on defects being identified at completion.

The role will be approximately 40% site-based inspection and testing and 60% quality management, documentation, compliance, audits, NCR management and liaison with the Main Contractor and project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Management

• Develop, implement and maintain the Company's Quality Plan and project-specific quality requirements.
