Job summary

Civic Recruitment Limited is helping Swindon Borough Council recruit a Qualified Solicitor for a 3‑month contract to deliver high‑quality local Government legal services. The role requires handling a varied caseload, offering practical and compliant advice, and representing the Council in relevant proceedings.

The postholder will work closely with Members and senior officers, ensuring robust governance, risk management and timely, accurate drafting.

Qualifications

• Qualified solicitor or barrister admitted to practise by the regulatory body.
• Significant post‑qualification legal experience.
• Strong knowledge of Local Government law and governance.
• Experience managing a varied legal caseload independently.
• Advocacy experience or ability to undertake advocacy work.
• Excellent legal drafting, negotiation and analytical skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Manage a personal caseload of routine, complex and sensitive legal matters with minimal supervision.
• Provide accurate legal advice to Members, senior officers and partner organisations.
• Conduct legal research and analyse legislation, case law and policy developments.
• Act as advocate for the Council in Courts, Tribunals, Inquiries and related proceedings.
• Draft, negotiate and complete a wide range of legal documents and reports.
• Advise client departments on governance and statutory compliance.
• Support Cabinet, Committee and Working Group meetings with legal input.
• Maintain accurate case records using electronic systems.
