Job summary

Qualifications

• Qualified as a Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX and eligible to practise in England and Wales.
• Substantial post-qualification experience in a relevant legal environment.
• Extensive knowledge of legal practice, procedures and standards.
• Experience managing a complex caseload and meeting deadlines.
• Experience of advocacy and representation in legal proceedings.
• Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with senior stakeholders.
• Experience supervising, coaching and developing junior staff.
• Understanding governance, decision-making and legal framework for local authorities.

Responsibilities

• Provide authoritative and practical legal advice to the County Council, its members, officers and committees.
• Manage a full, varied and demanding caseload with minimal supervision.
• Undertake and/or manage advocacy, representation and legal proceedings where required.
• Supervise, coach and develop junior staff to maintain high professional standards.
• Assist with the management of Legal Services and its resources.
• Identify legal, operational and emerging issues and advise on appropriate action.
• Support Monitoring Officer on illegality or procedural default matters.
• Contribute to policy development and new ways of working within Legal Services.
• Provide legal input into major projects and strategic objectives.
