Job summary

Ably is hiring for the Pub/Sub backend team to advance its real-time messaging platform. You will work on distributed systems at scale, building and shipping features across Pub/Sub, LiveObjects state sync, and AI Transport.

The role emphasizes AI tooling, ownership, and collaboration with other engineers to deliver reliable infrastructure. The team operates remote-first, with a London office option, and hires across the UK and Europe.

Qualifications

• Strong interest in distributed systems and large-scale infrastructure.
• Experience with messaging queues, pub/sub, or streaming systems at scale.
• Extensive experience with a high-level server-side language (Node.js or Go preferred).
• Ability to self-start, handle ambiguity, and make decisions with minimal hand-holding.
• Practical use of AI tooling to accelerate work while maintaining rigor.

Responsibilities

• Deliver core platform functionality across Ably's Pub/Sub APIs and related components.
• Collaborate with AI tooling for planning, spike work, and documentation while owning architectural quality.
• Tackle hard distributed-systems problems with the engineering team.
• Align with Developer First principles to reduce developer friction and speed up delivery.
• Ship features promptly to users and measure impact on developers and customers.
