Psychology, Criminology & Sociology Graduates – Support Children with Trauma in Newcastle Schools

On behalf of Protocol Education, we are seeking Psychology, Criminology, and Sociology graduates to work as SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Support Assistants in primary and secondary schools across Newcastle.

This full-time, term-time role (Monday to Friday) is a fantastic opportunity to apply your academic knowledge while supporting children who have experienced trauma, helping them succeed both socially and academically.

Your background in understanding human behaviour, mental health, and social systems makes you ideally suited to support young people facing emotional and behavioural challenges. This role is particularly valuable if you are considering future careers in educational psychology, counselling, social work, teaching, or youth justice.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support to children with SEMH needs and SEND, helping them engage with their education.

  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences.

  • Implementing behaviour management strategies and emotional support plans.

  • Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to provide tailored support to each child.

  • Helping pupils develop coping strategies and supporting their emotional and social development.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A degree in Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, or a related field.

  • Full availability Monday to Friday during term time.

  • A genuine desire to support vulnerable children and help them reach their potential.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships.

  • Patience, resilience, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
