Job summary

Transportukbus is seeking a PSV Chargehand for day shifts at Southall Depot. The role reports to the Fleet Manager and involves repairing, maintaining, and overseeing a team to ensure reliable, safe bus services in line with contractual obligations.

Key qualifications include NVQ Level 2 for PSV/HGV maintenance, hybrid awareness/diagnostics, IRTEC and SMT credentials. A PCV licence is welcome but not required. You will work 12-hour shifts (four days on/off) and contribute to planning and safety.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 2 or equivalent for PSV/HGV maintenance is required.
• Current recognised qualifications in hybrid awareness and hybrid fault diagnostics.
• IRTEC and SMT qualifications should be evidenced by the awarding body.
• PCV licence is not essential; training can be provided.
• Good Maths and English, plus ability to read manuals and service docs.
• Experience with fleet management software is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair and maintain buses to high quality standards.
• Monitor outputs and delegate work to the team as required.
• Diagnose mechanical and electronic faults and record work.
• Communicate progress to the Service Manager and assist with planning.
• Take on some Service Manager duties when required.
• Observe safety instructions and work flexibly to meet deadlines.

PSV Chargehand Days

Description

Reporting to the Service Manager with the day to day responsibilities for repairing and maintaining the fleet of buses in accordance with the Company’s policies and standards, by ensuring that work is delegated to the team as appropriate and their outputs are monitored, in order to deliver a consistently reliable, safe, high quality work output and results, in line with specified targets, contractual obligations and commercial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspecting, repairing and maintaining our buses.
• Checking the quality of our repairs.
• Investigating and diagnosing any mechanical and electronic faults.
• Recording those faults, and the work we’ve done to fix them, using a tablet
• Making decisions about road calls.
• Liaising with iBus and the engineering team to avoid lost mileage.
• Delegate work to the team as appropriate and monitor outputs.
• Following safety instructions and reporting any issues.
• Regularly updating the Service Manager on progress, and helping with planning.
• Potentially taking on a few Service Manager responsibilities when they’re away.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Work 12hr shifts with four days on and four days off.
• Have at least an NVQ level 2 qualification for maintenance and repair of public service vehicles or heavy goods vehicles (or an equivalent international qualification). Rate dependant on qualification Level.
• Must have current recognised qualifications in hybrid awareness and hybrid fault diagnostics.
• We’ll need to see evidence of your IRTEC and SMT qualification from the awarding body. If you don’t have an NVQ we’ll need you to pass the IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician exam during your six-month probation.
• Oh, and it’s not essential, but it’d be great if you also have a PCV licence. Don’t worry if you don’t as we would also love to teach you to drive our buses.
• Have a good standard of Maths and English.
• Be able to read and understand instructions and service manuals.
• Know how to use fleet management technical computer systems.
• Be good in a team – whether that’s working with your direct colleagues or beyond.
• Be able to meet deadlines and work flexibly when we need you to (for instance, we might ask you to work from a different depot or take a different shift).
• Be happy to take any training the service manager asks you to.Be able to work well using your own initiative.
• Be safety conscious in everything you do.
