Job summary

Active Staff is seeking a Prototype Technician to join a growing team. You will build and test prototype assemblies, work with engineers on new designs, and help transition prototypes into full-scale manufacturing.

You will modify prototypes for design changes, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to design-for-manufacture improvements. Strong mechanical skills and reading engineering drawings are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience in prototyping, R&D, manufacturing or engineering technician role.
• Strong mechanical and/or electro-mechanical assembly skills.
• Experience with soldering, wiring, testing and calibration.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacture principles.
• Excellent attention to detail and practical problem-solving skills.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• A proactive approach and the ability to adapt to changing designs and priorities.
• Experience within scientific instruments or precision engineering would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Build and test prototype assemblies, components and systems from drawings and work instructions.
• Collaborate with engineers to develop and refine new designs.
• Modify and rework prototypes for design changes and issue resolution.
• Provide feedback on assembly processes, materials and design improvements.
• Support design-for-manufacture activities for efficient repeatable manufacturing.
• Assist with assembly documentation, work instructions and testing procedures.
• Liaise with production teams to transition prototype builds to repeatable manufacturing.
• Use and maintain mechanical, electrical and precision testing equipment.
• Maintain records of prototype builds, modifications and test results.
• Support management of prototype components, materials and stock.
