The Plant, Protection and Control Engineer plays a vital role within the design team. He / She is responsible for the design delivery of substation plant, equipment, and protection systems across various electrical infrastructures, including new connection projects in both the distribution and transmission sectors.

They are responsible for detailed design and procurement of substation plant, including switchgear, power transformers, voltage control equipment, protection systems, protective relays, connectors, busbars, SCADA-based telemetry, and all associated substation build activities throughout the project lifecycle.

The primary role is to ensure substation infrastructure is correctly identified and procured in a timely manner. This is achieved by preparing and delivering functional specifications, equipment schedules, and scheme drawings. They provide ongoing technical support and liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to order plant and equipment according to client specifications and approved designs.

Responsibilities

  1. Assess client project requirements and produce detailed plant, equipment, and protection specifications.
  2. Create system designs ensuring compliance with applicable standards and coordinate with manufacturers and suppliers.
  3. Assist with tendering activities and provide technical guidance for proposed schemes.
  4. Prepare site layouts and schematics for multi-stage substation construction projects.
  5. Manage external plant and equipment manufacturers, design consultants, and oversee design outputs for compatibility with electrical requirements.
  6. Liaise with internal and external teams, clients, manufacturers, and consultancies to produce accurate designs within designated timescales.
  7. Produce detailed electrical control and protection schematic drawings for large electrical infrastructure projects.
  8. Develop electrical drawings, procurement lists, and wiring diagrams for control and protection systems.
  9. Prepare functional specifications and advise on procurement, liaising with manufacturers to order plant as per client specifications.
  10. Produce detailed specifications for high voltage plant and equipment related to substations.
  11. Review manufacturer proposals and ensure equipment suitability aligns with design.
  12. Create equipment schedules in line with IEC, DNO, ENA, IDNO, and client standards.
  13. Develop and review single line diagrams, P&C block diagrams, and connection diagrams.
  14. Produce AC/DC schematic drawings, control and protection diagrams, cable schedules, SCADA, and multicore cable terminations.
  15. Maintain technical and commercial dialogue with suppliers and clients.
  16. Ensure proper documentation management and change control.

Qualifications And Requirements

  1. Proficient understanding of electrical industry standards, policies, and their application.
  2. Good knowledge of electrical plant, transformers, protection, relays, control, and construction disciplines, aligned with ENA, BS, and IEC standards.
  3. Strong electrical knowledge in both contestable and non-contestable connection markets, with experience in substation construction, cabling, overhead lines, switchgear, protection, and control systems.
  4. Good knowledge of power systems, renewable energy, and protection design across voltages.
  5. Ability to develop detailed designs from scope briefs based on standards.
  6. Capability to prepare single-line diagrams for multi-stage substations.
  7. Degree-level education or equivalent is required.
