Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has an exciting opportunity for an Underwriter to join our Energy & Technical Property team in London. In this role you will be responsible for developing and underwriting opportunities for operational power risks and play a pivotal role in growing the Power portfolio.

Core to the role will be the analysis of risk exposures of new and renewal business and you will be required to make sound underwriting decisions. You will be responsible for driving a sustainable long-term focused profitable portfolio of operational power risks. You will be expected to develop strong relationships with brokers, customers and BHSI teammates.

We are seeking an individual with a background in underwriting property power business, who enthusiastically strives for excellence in every area from underwriting risks to delivering customer and broker service. In addition, necessary character, relationship building and negotiating skills to help build a portfolio of lead and follow business is required.

Collaboration across all areas of the business is important to us at BHSI. You will need to build strong relationships with our Actuarial, Risk Engineering and Claims teams to support you in assessing risks and refine your underwriting decisions.

Excellent administration, data and file management skills are required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Support the development and build-out of International Property that is consistent with the teams focus on profitable growth
• Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships
• Underwrite accounts while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation without sacrificing discipline, diligence and quality service
• Underwrite challenging risks while developing creative solutions for our brokers and customers
• Maintain awareness of the competitive environment and risk profile of the International Property market
• Effectively communicate the BHSI value proposition
• Be a positive reflection on the company by demonstrating integrity and leadership in the marketplace

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• 5+ years of Operational Power Underwriting experience
• Strong underwriting acumen, including understanding deployment of nett capacity, Natural Catastrophe risk and profitability over top line growth
• Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts; it’s coverage intent, structure and application - how it would respond in certain claim scenarios
• Strong collaboration and team building skills
• Strong communication skills including negotiation, communications and presentation experience and customer meeting experience with an ability to obtain valuable insights into company exposures via dialogue with senior executives
• Degree or equivalent education, and/or relevant insurance qualifications
• Willing to travel
