Job description

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland. But it’s what’s behind every job here at Scottish Water. Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from reservoir to tap – and from sewer to treatment plant.

Our Pipe bridges, Property & Access (PPA) team is part of the Network Maintenance group in the Environment, Planning & Assurance Water Service Strategy team. The PPA team have responsibility for maintenance planning of specific clean water related asset groups: - pipe crossings, road bridges, site buildings, asset access, and general security requirements.

Scottish Water have developed a suite of Management Approaches (MAs) to set out our policies for the inspection and maintenance of all of our asset groups. We use these MA’s as a basis for our work within the PPA team.

This PPA team Project Manager role at Scottish Water focuses on planning, co-ordination, governance, and promotion of maintenance projects and programmes. The main aim is to ensure efficient inspection and promotion of follow-on maintenance work for our asset groups. You will play a crucial role in promoting projects that maintain and enhance elements of Scotland’s water infrastructure.

You will report directly to our PPA Technical Team Manager, alongside 3 Senior Service Planners and a Service Planner.

What You'll Do

You’ll support the review and monitoring of inspection programmes and implement any required improvements to current programmes, or the creation of new ones.

You will also be involved in the development, promotion and governance of required interventions and their timing to deliver Scottish Water MA requirements. Enabling proper inspection report assessment from an engineering perspective to establish optimal scope for promotion for pipe crossings and other structures where required.

Supporting the ongoing development and updating of the PPA team’s Management Approaches.

Work closely with SW internal teams, including other MA owners, SW Security, Operations, Portfolio Management, and Delivery Vehicles to build strong programme and project relationships to ensure goals are met.

Ensure that all projects and programmes meet regulatory requirements and industry standards, linking also with SW requirements. Additionally, you will prepare Project Investment Appraisals (PIAs) for larger projects to facilitate the approval of preferred solutions.

A key part of your role will be financial management, tracking project and programme budgets and ensuring transparency. You will be expected to achieve key project gateways on time, managing or reallocating budgets as required.

Identify cost-saving opportunities and prepare financial reports for team manager.

You will help to develop and optimise inspection programmes, and also conduct inspection report assessment from an engineering perspective to establish optimal scope promotion for pipe crossings and other structures where required.

What You’ll Bring

You will need strong stakeholder management skills to develop, build, and maintain relationships with key internal teams.

Clear communication is essential, as you’ll provide regular updates on project and programme progress, challenges, and outcomes.

A civil engineering background is required. You will be a Chartered Engineer with a civil / structural engineering background and experience working on civil structures. Knowledge in particular of bridge structures would be an advantage.

You’ll also need to conduct occasional site visits and inspections to monitor project progress and compliance.

You will support the team in resolving queries from other parts of the SW business as and when necessary.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

This is a full-time position based on working 35 hours per week. You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy up to five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 7 salary band (£41,000 – £51,970). If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a salary at the bottom of that band. Performance-driven pay progression will then allow you to move through the range.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - the closing date for applications is midnight on the 12th June 2025.

Interviews are planned for the week commencing 23rd June and will take place at the Bridge in Stepps, Glasgow.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
