About the Opportunity

The announcement of a planned 20-year lifetime extension for Sizewell B is much more than an energy story. It is a significant investment in people, skills, local communities and the UK's long-term energy resilience. Sizewell B will continue generating electricity until 2055, extending its original operating life by two decades. For Suffolk and the wider East of England, this represents a major opportunity to build on an already strong nuclear legacy while creating lasting economic and social value for generations to come.

Since entering service in 1995, Sizewell B has been one of the UK's most reliable sources of low carbon electricity. Today, the station generates enough power for around 2.5 million homes.

At a time when energy security remains a national priority, extending the life of an existing nuclear plant makes strategic sense. Nuclear generation provides stable, around-the-clock electricity regardless of weather conditions, complementing the growing contribution from renewable energy sources.
