Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking an experienced Project Manager with a strong utilities background to lead multi-utility diversion work for the Lower Thames Crossing programme in the UK. You will manage design through construction, coordinating engineering and construction teams to ensure safe, on-time, on-budget delivery while engaging stakeholders and maintaining governance.

  • Proven experience as a Project Manager delivering utility or major infrastructure projects.
  • Strong background in multi-utility works (electricity, gas, water, wastewater or telecoms).
  • Experience managing complex, programme-driven projects with multiple stakeholders and interfaces.
  • Strong leadership and team management capability, with experience leading multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Sound understanding of construction governance, commercial management and project controls.
  • Strong knowledge of health, safety and environmental standards within a construction environment.
  • Ability to challenge designs, drive buildability and make informed, cost-effective decisions.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the end-to-end delivery of multi-utility diversion projects, from planning and design through to completion and handover.
  • Managing and coordinating multi-disciplinary teams, including Construction Managers, Engineers and functional leads.
  • Driving programme delivery, ensuring works are planned, sequenced and executed efficiently.
  • Managing subcontractors and supply chain partners to ensure performance, quality and contractual compliance.
  • Engaging with Statutory Undertakers, local authorities and key stakeholders to coordinate works, outages and interfaces.
  • Maintaining full accountability for health, safety and environmental performance, with a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
  • Reviewing and approving RAMS, leading safety initiatives and ensuring compliance with legislation and standards.
  • Overseeing project governance, including reporting, risk management and maintaining accurate project records.
  • Managing project budgets, forecasts and resources to ensure delivery in line with financial and programme targets.
  • Leading risk, issue and opportunity management, ensuring proactive mitigation and escalation where required.
  • Supporting team development, mentoring colleagues and fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment.

About the role

Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Project Manager with a strong utilities background to support the delivery of multi-utility diversion works on the Lower Thames Crossing – Roads North of the Thames (RNOT) programme.

This is a pivotal leadership role on one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects. The successful delivery of major highways and structures relies on the safe and efficient diversion and protection of critical utility assets, including electricity, gas, water, wastewater and telecoms. These enabling works are fundamental to unlocking the wider construction programme.

As Project Manager, you will take full accountability for the successful planning, management and delivery of projects from design through to construction, commissioning and handover. You will lead multi-disciplinary teams, manage key stakeholder relationships and ensure delivery is achieved safely, sustainably, on time and within budget.
