Summary

The Lead Project Engineer – Substation is responsible for the engineering, coordination, and execution of substation projects from conception through commissioning. This role ensures technical compliance, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery of substation design and construction, working closely with internal teams, clients, contractors, and vendors. The engineer will coordinate and support the design team during project phases and assist the tendering team to produce safe, robust, and optimal designs and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Manage engineering deliverables, schedules, and budgets for substation projects.
• Coordinate the design team across all disciplines.
• Liaise with project management on engineering budgets and provide forecast cost-to-complete estimates with justified changes.
• Manage project programmes and interface with planning engineers for design scheduling.
• Provide forecasts for project completion and resource planning.
• Approve documentation according to contractual requirements.
• Coordinate and chair design reviews and hazard reviews.
• Identify and manage risks across functions, evaluate risks and opportunities, and strategize mitigation.
• Support the Project Manager in risk and opportunity assessments and actions.
• Act as Principal Designer Representative on projects.
• Work with customers to shape solutions, gather feedback, and innovate for improvements.
• Oversee subcontract creation and manage subcontractors alongside supply chain functions.

Your background

• At least 5 years of experience in the electricity/power industry.
• Familiarity with substation design, equipment (transformers, breakers, switchgear), and electrical protection systems.
• Knowledge of Transmission or Distribution practices (400kV to 11kV).
• HNC/HND in electrical engineering or equivalent.
• Understanding of Distribution Network Operator / National Grid standards and drawing practices.
