Location: London and surrounding areas
At Balfour Beatty, we're delivering some of the UK's most critical power infrastructure projects, helping to connect communities, enable renewable energy and support the transition to a low-carbon future.
We're looking for a Project Engineer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution team, supporting the delivery of our London Power Tunnels Decommissioning Project.
This is not a traditional Project Engineer role and it certainly isn't a standard 9-to-5 position.
We're looking for someone who wants to be at the heart of operational delivery, working closely with site teams, customers and stakeholders across London to support planned and emergency works on critical power infrastructure. This is a role for someone who enjoys being out on site, solving problems, coordinating teams and taking ownership when it matters most.
While the demands of the role are significant, so is the opportunity.
You’ll join one of the UK's largest and busiest infrastructure contractors, working within a Power T&D business that delivers major transmission and distribution projects across the country. You’ll gain exposure to specialist HV cable repair and decommissioning works, develop your technical, operational and leadership skills, and build a career path that could lead into Project Management, Construction Management and senior operational leadership roles in the future.
This role would particularly suit someone in the early stages of their career. You may already be working as a Graduate Engineer, Assistant Project Engineer, Site Engineer or Engineer and be looking for a role that offers more exposure, responsibility and development than a traditional office-based position.
You’ll spend significant time on site, learn directly from experienced operational teams, and develop skills that will set you up for a successful long‑term career within one of the UK's leading infrastructure businesses.
Working closely with the Project Manager and operational delivery teams, you’ll play a key role in coordinating and supporting HV cable repair and decommissioning activities across London.
Key responsibilities will include:
We’re more interested in attitude, flexibility and willingness to learn than extensive industry experience.
The successful candidate will have:
Previous power industry experience would be advantageous, but it is by no means essential.
This role comes with significant operational responsibilities and requires a high degree of flexibility.
You should be comfortable with:
If you’re looking for a traditional office‑based Project Engineer role with predictable hours and limited travel, this position is unlikely to be the right fit.
However, if you’re ambitious, eager to learn, willing to roll your sleeves up and want to build a long‑term career with one of the UK's leading infrastructure contractors, this is an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable experience on a nationally significant project while developing the skills needed to progress into Project Management, Construction Management and beyond.
Join us and play a key role in delivering critical infrastructure while building a career with real opportunities for growth and progression.
Day in, day out, our teams deliver some of the UK’s most ambitious, exciting and meaningful projects; developing, building and maintaining the vital infrastructure that supports national economies and strengthens communities.
Why join us?
As if contributing to and supporting work that makes life better for millions wasn’t rewarding enough, we offer a full range of benefits too. You’ll have the freedom to shape the package that’s right for you and your life. Here are some of our key benefits:
Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution teams work with regional, national and international electricity network owners and operators to provide technical engineering solutions across the full spectrum of the electricity grid, including overhead lines, cabling, substations and distribution networks.
From scoping and feasibility, to design, construction and on‑going maintenance, our in‑house experts, flexible resources and industry‑leading innovations support customers in the development of some of the UK’s most ambitious power transmission and distribution projects.
