Job summary

EnerSys is seeking a Project Engineer to join its Lithium-ion space battery division at the Culham Science Centre near Abingdon, Oxfordshire. You will lead technical assessment, analysis, data review and documentation for Space missions, collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team.

The role focuses on delivering on-time, on-quality project outcomes, acting as primary technical representative to customers, with opportunities to influence standards and future space missions.

Qualifications

• Degree in STEM subject or equivalent qualification.
• Experience as an engineer in a customer-facing role.
• Knowledge of ECSS standards preferred.
• Experience with space industry primes and agencies is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed project design solutions under guidance from senior engineers.
• Analyze electrical, thermal and mechanical performance of the battery.
• Develop drawings with CAD Manager to generate drawings.
• Produce project documentation such as analysis reports and test plans.
• Support in-build checks and battery test campaigns at external sites.
• Communicate technical matters to customers and support proposals.

Job Purpose

An excellent opportunity for a Project Engineer to join a well-established, exciting and growing Lithium-ion space business. The company designs, manufacturers and qualifies batteries for international space missions on satellites, launchers, and interplanetary vehicles. The company’s customers include both national and international space agencies like NASA and European Space Agency as well as working across the commercial market supporting missions that include Earth observation, internet of things satellite constellations and global positioning systems. The position is based in the Culham Science Centre near Abingdon in Oxfordshire and is a job that can truly impact people across the globe.

The Project Engineer acts as a lead engineer on customer or internal projects. The engineer provides technical assessment, analysis, data review and technical documentation for the specified project. The engineer will work within a multi-disciplinary team, with support from Junior Engineers, to ensure on-time and on-quality delivery to the customer. The role will be the primary technical representative to the customer for the specified project. The candidate will have a STEM background, and a keen interest in working on space projects. The candidate will have experience working as a technically responsible engineer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for the detailed project design solution under guidance from Senior/Principal engineers:

• Analysis of the electrical, thermal and mechanical performance of the battery
• Specification of battery components e.g. heaters
• Work with CAD Manager to generate drawings
• Support in-build technical checks
• Support technical checks during the battery test campaign, including support to testing at external sites, e.g. vibration
• Verification of project hardware from test data, and correlation to predicted performance
• Produce project documentation such as analysis reports, battery user manuals, test plans, and test reports
• Contribute technical information to project readiness review and non-conformance meetings
• Production of compliance statements to the project and industry standards
• Communication on technical matters to customers
• Support proposals by providing technical inputs
• Support inputs to technical papers and presentations

Responsible for on-time and on-quality solutions

Supports allocation of tasks to assigned Graduate/Junior Engineers

Supports department level process management documentation

Supports continuous improvement in the department

Qualifications

A degree in STEM subject, or equivalent qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Required

• Experience as an engineer in a customer facing role
• Good level of IT skills for data analysis, modelling, results presentation and reporting
• Experience with test and verification activities
• Experience in report writing Desirable
• Experience working with space industry primes, agencies and end users
• Experience in some of the following areas: o Mechanical design and analysis o Thermal design and analysis o Li-ion battery performance o Reliability and failure modes o Vibration/shock testing
• Knowledge and understanding of ECSS standards

Skill and Competencies

• Attention to detail and an ability to examine and present data clearly
• An ability to effectively prioritise and work to detailed scheduled plans and tight deadlines
