Job summary

Sheffield Register Office, part of Sheffield City Council, is recruiting two part-time Professional Officers to join the team at the Town Hall. The roles involve supporting births, deaths, marriages registrations and related ceremonies across Sheffield, with travel to family hubs and licensed premises.

You will work alternating weeks totaling 18.5 hours per week, with weekend work possible and full training provided.

Sheffield Register Office is seeking to recruit two part-time Professional Officers to join the team at Sheffield Register Office, based at the Town Hall. We are looking for confident, approachable and professional individuals who enjoy engaging with members of the public and delivering a high standard of customer service.

Training provider: Experience with working within the registration service would be beneficial but not essential as full training is given internally.

About the role

As a Professional Officer, you will support the delivery of an efficient, effective and customer-focused public service for the citizens of Sheffield and visitors to the city. Sheffield Register Office has a statutory responsibility to ensure that births, deaths, marriages and a range of other registration duties are carried out in accordance with the requirements and compliance standards set by the General Register Office (GRO).

Although the role is based at the Town Hall, you will be required to travel to other locations across Sheffield, including family hubs to attend appointments and licensed premises, to support the delivery of ceremonies.

The role involves working within the relevant legislative framework, including the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953, the Marriage Act 1949 and the Civil Partnership Act 2004, among others.

Our core service is delivered Monday to Friday. However, weekend working may be required to support the delivery of ceremonies. Registrars in Sheffield may be required to work one weekend per month where cover cannot be provided through volunteers as part of their contract.

Successful part-time employees will work alternate weeks from each other

Week 1 will be three days Monday through to Wednesday 22.2 hours

Week 2 will be two days Thursday and Friday 14.4 hours

Equal to 18.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, and benefit from a generous annual leave entitlement.
