Job description

Based within our Caledonian Optical Lab at Kirkhill, Dyce, the Production Manager, reporting to our Head of Manufacturing, is responsible for overseeing the manufacturing process, ensuring that production runs smoothly, efficiently, and within budget. This role involves managing production teams, coordinating production schedules, optimizing workflows, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring quality control throughout the production cycle.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Production Planning and Scheduling:

  • Develop and implement production schedules to meet demand forecasts and company targets.
  • Monitor production progress, adjusting schedules as necessary to meet deadlines and minimize downtime.
  • Ensure the proper allocation of resources (staff, equipment, materials) to meet production goals.

Team Leadership and Supervision:

  • Lead and manage a team of production workers, supervisors, and technicians.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide coaching, and resolve any personnel issues.
  • Ensure the team adheres to safety and quality standards while maintaining high productivity.

Process Optimization:

  • Analyse production processes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Implement lean manufacturing techniques to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as production output, downtime, and quality rates.

Quality Control:

  • Ensure that products meet quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Troubleshoot production issues related to quality and resolve them promptly.
  • Develop and enforce quality control procedures to maintain high product standards.

Budget and Cost Management:

  • Assist in the preparation of production budgets and monitor costs to stay within budgetary constraints.
  • Control material usage, labour costs, and overhead costs to achieve cost-effective production processes.

Health, Safety, and Compliance:

  • Maintain a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Oversee proper handling and storage of materials to comply with environmental and safety standards.

Maintenance and Equipment Management:

  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of production equipment.
  • Ensure that machines and tools are in optimal working condition to prevent disruptions in production.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of production activities, inventory, and staffing levels.
  • Generate daily, weekly, and monthly reports on production performance, including output, efficiency, and any issues encountered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing, Business Administration, or related field (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing or production management role.
  • Strong knowledge of production processes, supply chain management, and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficiency in production management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Certification in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar continuous improvement methodologies.

Working Hours

  • Working hours are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
