Job summary

Mitie Immigration & Justice is recruiting Prisoner Custody Officers (Vehicle Based) for the Glasgow Vehicle Base. You will ensure safe, secure transport of individuals between prisons, courts and custody locations while maintaining welfare and compliance with procedures.

The role requires a full UK driving licence, the ability to work 42 hours per week on a 4 on/4 off pattern, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. A £2,000 sign-on bonus is available.

Responsibilities

We are looking for committed, professional and resilient individuals to join our operational team as Prisoner Custody Officers (Vehicle Based) at our Glasgow Vehicle Base.

This is a rewarding and challenging role where you will play a vital part in supporting the Scottish justice system by ensuring the safe, secure and respectful transport of individuals between prisons, police custody suites, courts and other authorised locations. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to make a positive difference while operating within a professional custodial environment.

To safely, securely and professionally escort and transport individuals in custody between prisons, courts, police custody suites, healthcare appointments and other approved locations throughout Scotland.

The post holder will maintain the highest standards of prisoner care, safety and security whilst ensuring all movements are conducted in accordance with operational procedures, legislation, contractual requirements and Mitie values

Main Duties

Prisoner Care and Welfare

• Ensure the safety, security and welfare of all individuals in custody during transportation.
• Treat all individuals with dignity, fairness and respect.
• Recognise and respond appropriately to vulnerable, distressed or at-risk individuals.
• Apply a trauma-informed approach when interacting with those in custody.
• Conduct and document prisoner risk assessments and welfare observations.

Escorting and Transportation

• Escort prisoners safely between prisons, courts, police custody centres, hospitals and other approved locations.
• Ensure prisoners are transported securely in accordance with legislation and operational procedures.
• Conduct vehicle and equipment checks before and after journeys.
• Maintain the security and integrity of escort vehicles at all times.
• Carry out prisoner handovers and receptions in accordance with established procedures.

Safety and Security

• Conduct searches of prisoners and escort vehicles as required.
• Prevent escapes and security incidents through vigilance and adherence to procedure.
• Respond effectively to incidents and emergencies.
• Report security concerns, risks and intelligence through the appropriate channels.
• Maintain accurate operational records and documentation.

Partnership Working

• Liaise professionally with Scottish Prison Service staff, Police Scotland, court officials, healthcare providers and other justice partners.
• Promote effective communication and collaboration across the justice system.
• Represent Mitie professionally at all times.

These competencies should be demonstrated consistently while delivering secure prisoner escorting services.

To be eligible for this role, applicants must:

• Have the right to work in the UK with no restrictions that would prevent them from undertaking the role.
• Be able to successfully complete the required security vetting and pre-employment checks.
• Be willing to undergo criminal record checks through Disclosure Scotland and any contract-specific vetting requirements.
• Provide evidence of identity, employment history, and any other documentation required as part of the screening process.

A candidate may be eligible if they have:

• British or Irish citizenship.
• Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
• EU Settled Status.
• Pre-Settled Status (provided they continue to hold a valid right to work).
• Another visa category that provides an unrestricted right to undertake the role and satisfy vetting requirements.

Earnings potential up to £48,793 per annum, shift paid straight through (£14.42 per hour). £2,000 sign-on bonus available.
