Principal / Senior Control & Instrumentation Engineer

This is an excellent opportunity where you will hold the Lead Design Engineer position on one or more Projects in our Energy Sector. Within this sector, Costain delivers projects to industry-leading clients across various phases, including concept study, FEED, or EPCm. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver top-quality engineering on time and within budget. Our pipeline offers opportunities in areas from brownfield Oil and Gas assets to advanced Hydrogen production and storage. We also operate in sectors such as Nuclear, Defence, and Transport. This is a hybrid role with 2-3 days based at the London office, with flexible working options.

Senior Engineers will be considered for this role, with responsibilities and experience requirements adjusted accordingly based on a gap analysis and development plan.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical input for C&I disciplines on projects and proposals, including preparation, review, and approval of engineering documentation.
• Organize discipline staff, allocate work, and ensure delivery against plans.
• Mentor and develop graduates and less experienced engineers.
• Produce high-quality C&I engineering deliverables on schedule, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant codes, standards, legislation, and client requirements.
• Prepare equipment and materials requisitions for control systems, safety systems, analyser houses, and field instrumentation.
• Prepare scopes of work for installation.
• Review supplier quotations and conduct technical bid assessments.

Additional Tasks

• Develop hardware and software for control or protection systems throughout their lifecycle.
• Qualify software for SMART devices and PLCs.
• Determine functional safety requirements (probabilistic and deterministic).
• Prepare datasheets and specifications for C&I equipment.
• Develop and modify C&I safety cases and cybersecurity cases.

Qualifications

• Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
• Strong knowledge of design practices and installation requirements across industries.
• At least 15 years of engineering experience in Oil & Gas, Nuclear, or Water sectors.
• Extensive knowledge of UK legislation and standards.
• Competence in installing equipment in potentially explosive process environments.
• Membership or close to membership in a relevant professional body.
• Focus on business improvement, efficiency, supporting talent recruitment, and promoting the Costain brand.
