Job summary

Hamilton Barnes is recruiting for a Principal Engineer to act as the designated Technical Authority at a major nuclear infrastructure site in Somerset. The role requires formal authority to approve designs and test strategies, with deep expertise in radio, wireless, DAS, and RF over fibre, including DMR Tier III experience.

You will mentor engineers and deliver assurance reports. The successful candidate will possess a degree in electronics/telecommunications and demonstrate experience in design

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent in electronic, telecommunications, radio, networking, systems, or related engineering discipline.
• DMR Tier III, RF over Fibre, and DAS experience - essential for this role.
• SMSTS or SSSTS certification.
• Demonstrable design authority experience with formal technical approvals and system sign-off.
• Experience leading or approving FAT, SAT, site acceptance, integration and commissioning tests.
• Complex fault diagnosis and structured root cause investigation experience.
• Deep expertise across at least two technology domains within integrated communications systems.
• Full UK driving licence and ability to meet nuclear site access requirements.

Responsibilities

• Act as the designated Technical Authority for all engineering activities within delegated authority.
• Review, approve, and sign off HLDs, LLDs, drawings, specs, and documentation.
• Own or approve test and acceptance strategies for systems, major installations, and configuration changes.
• Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and audits to assess quality and condition.
• Provide 2nd/3rd line support for complex or high-impact faults.
• Lead structured root cause investigations and produce technical reports.
• Protect approved baselines and configuration integrity through the asset lifecycle.
• Mentor senior engineers, project engineers and technicians.
• Produce a monthly technical assurance report on status, PMI outcomes and risks.
