The Principal Product Manager is a senior individual contributor within the product management function, accountable for defining and delivering the long-term product, customer, commercial, and technology strategy across a portfolio of products, business domains, or product ecosystems. The role is responsible for shaping investment priorities, product direction, market positioning, commercial outcomes, and organisational product capability.

The Principal Product Manager (Payroll) serves as the recognised authority on payroll and adjacent workflows, influencing business strategy, product operating models, AI adoption, governance frameworks, and cross-functional decision making. Working across executive leadership, engineering, design, commercial, legal, and customer communities, the role ensures the portfolio delivers sustainable commercial growth, market differentiation, customer value, and strategic advantage.

What You Will Do
  • Maintain payroll domain expertise, keeping abreast of current and future proposed legislative compliance, evolving market trends and the competitor landscape
  • Define and own the long-term product strategy, vision, and portfolio roadmap across multiple products, sectors, or business domains.
  • Establish and govern portfolio-wide product management frameworks, delivery standards, prioritisation models, and ways of working.
  • Lead executive-level customer engagement, ensuring strategic customer insight directly influences business, investment, and portfolio decisions.
  • Define portfolio investment priorities and make build, buy, partner, or AI-enable decisions that shape future product capability and competitive advantage.
  • Own portfolio commercial strategy, including pricing, packaging, revenue growth, profitability, and long-term market positioning.
  • Hold accountability for portfolio commercial performance, business outcomes, and the sustainable growth of product revenues.
  • Partner with executive leaders across Product, Engineering, Commercial, Finance, Legal, Marketing, and Customer functions to align strategic priorities and investments.
  • Define portfolio-wide analytics, performance measurement, data governance, and insight frameworks to enable strategic decision-making.
  • Establish organisational standards and governance for AI-enabled products, responsible AI, regulatory compliance, and emerging technology adoption, including AI-enabled payroll capabilities such as anomaly detection, automated compliance checks, and predictive payroll insights.
  • Lead portfolio-level go-to-market strategy, market entry decisions, product positioning, and commercial launch planning, ensuring release timing aligns with key legislative milestones such as UK tax year-end and other statutory reporting deadlines.
  • Drive innovation strategy, transformational change initiatives, and future growth opportunities across the product portfolio.
  • Explore new partnership opportunities to drive further revenue growth
  • Mentor product management team and shape the capability, standards, culture, and future direction of the product management profession within the organisation.
What You Will Have
  • Expert-level domain expertise in UK payroll compliance and legislation is essential. Experience and knowledge Irish and UK Public Sector payroll also desirable.
  • Working knowledge of statutory payroll reporting and processes (e.g. RTI/FPS/EPS submissions, P45/P60, pensions auto-enrolment, Statutory Sick Pay, and National Minimum Wage) and experience integrating with HMRC, pension providers, and banking/BACS systems.
  • Expert-level understanding of product strategy, portfolio management, and enterprise product operating models.
  • Deep expertise in commercial product management, including pricing strategy, revenue optimisation, profit growth, business modelling, and investment governance.
  • Advanced knowledge of SaaS, platform, digital product, and technology business models.
  • Understanding of integrations with payroll systems (e.g. hr and time & attendance systems, benefits, pension providers, early wage access, pay verification etc).
  • Expert understanding of customer insight methodologies, strategic market analysis, and product-led growth principles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of governance, compliance, security, risk management, and regulatory frameworks impacting digital products.
  • Expert understanding of AI technologies, AI-enabled product ecosystems, responsible AI, governance frameworks, and regulatory obligations.
  • Strong understanding of financial management principles including ROI, gross margin, investment prioritisation, and portfolio performance management.
  • Deep awareness of market dynamics, competitive strategy, platform economics, ecosystem development, and emerging technologies.
  • A recognised payroll qualification (e.g. CIPP - Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) is highly desirable.
