Job summary

J. Murphy & Sons Ltd in the United Kingdom is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead Temporary Works within Murphy Applied Engineering, Glasgow, and across national projects. You will shape safe, economical design solutions and manage multi-project delivery with senior stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering required.
  • Chartered with ICE or IStructE.
  • Experience in financial management and control of projects.

  • Excellent communicator with ability to build relationships across the company.
  • Open-minded approach to solving civil/structural challenges.
  • Willingness to visit company sites and offices across the country.
  • Visible leadership qualities.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Project Design Engineer on multiple projects and coordinate between project teams and design engineers.
  • Maintain knowledge of client requirements, specifications, design codes and industry best practices.
  • Accountable for technical and commercial delivery of projects as directed by Engineering Manager.
  • Prepare and manage cost proposals for tenders and live projects as required.
  • Lead a small temporary works team and develop internal relationships with PMs and Directors.
  • Increase internal order book and deliver across Murphy projects in the north of the UK.
  • Mentor junior staff and graduates.
  • Undertake site visits when appropriate.
  • Collate feedback on solutions and contribute to lessons learned.
  • Collaborate with other Principal Engineers in development of the department.

About the Position

Murphy is recruiting for a Principal Engineer to work with Murphy Applied Engineering in Glasgow. Our engineering teams represent a multi-disciplined range of engineering skills, adding value across all our sectors, and pushing the boundaries of digital construction, engineering innovation and design to deliver intelligent, sustainable and economical engineering solutions.

In this role, you will provide safe, economic and constructible solutions within project timeframes for the company’s Business Units delivering for key strategic UK projects such as SSEN’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) Pathway to 2030 programme and supporting the rest of the UK team in delivering key infrastructure projects.

A Day in the Life of a Murphy Principal Engineer – Temporary Works
  • Act as the Project Design Engineer on multiple projects, serving as the central point of contact and coordination between project teams and design engineers.
  • Maintain solid knowledge of client requirements, specifications, design codes, and industry best practices.
  • Accountable for the technical and commercial delivery of projects allocated by the Engineering Manager in accordance with design procedures.
  • Prepare and manage cost proposals for tenders and live projects as required.
  • Lead a small temporary works team and develop long‑lasting internal relationships with Project Managers and Directors.
  • Increase the internal order book for your team and deliver on projects across the full range of Murphy projects across the north of the UK.
  • Mentor junior staff and graduates.
  • Undertake site visits when appropriate.
  • Collate feedback on solutions and contribute to lessons learned meetings.
  • Collaborate with other Principal Engineers in the development and growth of the department.
Qualifications and Experience
  • HND, Bachelor’s or Masters degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered with the ICE or IStructE.
  • Experience of effective financial management and control of projects.
  • Strong analytical and design skills with the ability to interpret project requirements.
  • Excellent communicator with a desire to develop relationships across the company.
  • Open‑minded approach to solving civil and structural engineering challenges, seeking the best solution from all perspectives of a project.
  • Willingness to visit the company’s sites and offices across the country.
  • Visible leadership qualities.
