Job summary

Major UK Bank's Retail Lending and Digital Channels technology team seeks a hands-on Principal Engineer to own the technical delivery from design to production. London | Hybrid – 6 days/month in office

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE (please apply only if you have all of these)

We are looking for a hands‑on Principal Engineer with strong Financial Services experience and a proven track record across:

• Java + Spring Boot Microservices
• AWS (essential), including migration experience
• PostgreSQL, MongoDB and Snowflake
• ReactJS
• CI/CD, Test Automation and TDD
• API design and delivery
• Large-scale enterprise applications delivered into production
• End-to-end digital journey delivery
• Technical architecture, design and engineering leadership
• Data Engineering or strong Data Architecture understanding
• Leading engineers in a matrix environment
• Strong stakeholder engagement across business and technology

THE ROLE

Join the Retail Lending, Digital Channels technology team of a major UK bank, where you'll work closely with Product Owners, Business Managers and Release Train Managers to shape business goals, translate them into technical solutions and ultimately own the technology through to production.

You’ll initially be highly hands‑on, with the role evolving towards approximately 30% leadership.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON

The initial project will involve bringing an Insurance capability in‑house from a third party, followed by work across Overdrafts.

You’ll initially work within Loans, with the opportunity to contribute across:

Loans | Overdrafts | Data Platforms | Insurance

You’ll be responsible for:

• Designing and engineering secure, scalable and high‑performing solutions
• Taking technical solutions from design through development and into production
• Developing architecture models and technical roadmaps
• Driving automation, resilience, security, performance and reusability
• Working closely with engineers and architects
• Leading approximately 3–5 engineers in a matrix environment

WHAT WILL SET YOU APART

AWS migration experience, particularly within Financial Services, will be highly valuable.

Experience across Retail Lending, Loans, Overdrafts, Insurance, Data Platforms or digital banking journeys would also be relevant.

You’ll need to be technically strong, commercially aware, personable and confident engaging with senior stakeholders, while remaining hands‑on with the technology.
