Job summary

Turnitin in Manchester seeks a Principal Backend Engineer specializing in Java and serverless architectures. You will build scalable distributed systems, model data, and deliver high-performing software for our educational platform.

The role is hands-on, with leadership duties guiding junior engineers and coordinating with Architects, PMs, and other leads. You will design RESTful APIs, event-driven components, and CI/CD pipelines while contributing to frontend components when needed.

Qualifications

• Over 10 years of backend development experience with Java.
• Extensive hands-on experience with serverless frameworks.
• Strong track record designing scalable distributed systems and data models.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineers across distributed teams.
• Proven ability to lead CI/CD pipelines and IaC practices.
• Excellent collaboration with Architects, PMs and engineering leads.
• Frontend familiarity with React or Web Components is a plus.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, and optimization of scalable backend services using Java and serverless tech.
• Architect and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems for high performance.
• Provide technical leadership and mentor junior engineers across locations.
• Oversee CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code implementations.
• Ensure code quality through peer reviews, testing, and best practices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful solutions.
• Develop and document shared components and APIs for reuse.
• Guide performance tuning, cost optimization, and reliability improvements.
