Job summary

Prospero Teaching are currently recruiting for experienced and passionate Primary Teaching Assistants to join a dedicated SEMH School in Southampton. The role supports pupils with SEMH needs in a nurturing classroom and offers ongoing training.

Start date ASAP, full-time hours, with a Temp-To-Perm contract. You will work closely with teachers and external agencies to promote emotional well-being, positive behaviour, and academic progress across key stage 1 and 2.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or in a relevant role.
  • Experience with SEMH needs is advantageous but not essential.
  • Ability to support pupils socially, emotionally, and academically.

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs within the classroom.
  • Assist with learning activities, engagement, and positive behaviour strategies.

Prospero Teaching are currently recruiting for experienced and passionate Teaching Assistants to join a dedicated Primary SEMH School in Southampton.

This specialist school provides high-quality education and support for primary-aged pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, creating a nurturing and structured environment where every child is encouraged to achieve their full potential.

As a successful candidate, you will play a key role in supporting pupils both academically and emotionally, helping them overcome barriers to learning while promoting confidence, resilience, and positive behaviour. You will work closely with teachers, support staff, and external professionals to provide a holistic approach to each pupil's development.

While previous experience within an SEMH, SEN, or alternative provision setting is advantageous, it is not essential. The school offers ongoing training and professional development.

Role:

Location: Southampton, Hampshire

Position: Primary Teaching Assistant (SEMH)

Start Date: ASAP (Immediate start available)

Contract Type: Temp-To-Perm

Hours: Full-Time, Monday-Friday

Pay Rate: From £14.96 per hour

Key Responsibilities
  • Support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within the classroom
  • Assist with learning activities, engagement, and positive behaviour strategies
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils to support emotional regulation
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, and external agencies
  • Support pupils' emotional, social, and personal development
Candidate Requirements
  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, Support Worker, or in a similar role (SEMH experience desirable but not essential)
  • Passion for supporting children with behavioural, emotional, and additional learning needs
  • Proactive, resilient, and able to engage pupils effectively
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to remain calm and adaptable in challenging situations
To be considered for this role, you must:
  • Have the Right to Work in the UK
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or be willing to apply
  • Provide professional referencing covering 24 months
