Job summary

Cover People are hiring for a Primary Teaching Assistant in South Manchester. The role starts September 2026 and is full-time and long-term, with the potential to go temp-to-perm for the right candidate.

You will work in a welcoming SEMH primary school, supporting children across KS1 and KS2 with social and emotional needs. The position runs Monday to Friday, 8:30am–4pm, with competitive PAYE pay via Cover People.

Qualifications

• SEMH understanding and experience in supporting primary pupils.
• Ability to manage behaviour using de-escalation techniques.
• Experience supporting KS1/KS2 students with social or emotional needs.

Responsibilities

• Support children in KS1 and KS2 with SEMH needs.
• Identify triggers and apply preventative strategies and de-escalation techniques.
• Break down instructions and tailor support in lessons.
• Provide encouragement and positive reinforcement.
• Collaborate with teachers, management, support staff, parents and external professionals.

Hours: Full time, Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4pm

Role

• Supporting children in both KS1 & 2 with social & emotional or mental health difficulties (SEMH).
• You will need to look out for triggers and employ preventative strategies and de-escalation techniques to help manage behaviour so that the pupil can focus on learning.
• Tailored support in lessons, breaking down instructions and tasks so they are easily understood and the pupil feels they are achievable.
• Providing lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement.
• Working closely with the teacher, management, support staff, parents and outside professionals.
• Contribute to a safe, positive, inclusive and collaborative work environment.

Requirements

• CV with full history from education to present.
• Right to Work & Proof of Address in the UK.
• DBS certificate on the Update Service (or be happy to apply for a new one).
• Min of 2 professional references.
• Overseas Police Check if applicable.
• Some experience supporting primary aged children with social or emotional needs.
