Job summary

Cover People are hiring a Primary Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming SEMH primary school in South Manchester. The role is full-time and long-term, starting September 2026, with a daily rate of £100-£115 DOE, paid PAYE.

You will support KS1 & KS2 pupils with social or emotional needs, use de-escalation strategies, and work closely with teachers, parents and outside professionals to foster a safe, inclusive learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting primary-aged children with social or emotional needs (SEMH).
  • Ability to de-escalate Behavioural challenges in classroom settings.
  • Collaborative approach with teachers, parents and external professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils in KS1 & KS2 with SEMH needs to access learning.
  • Identify triggers and apply preventative strategies to maintain engagement.
  • Provide tailored support by breaking down tasks and giving encouragement.

Role:Primary Teaching Assistant at primary school in South Manchester.

Start date:2nd September 2026.

Contract:Long term. Temp to perm for the right person.

Hours:Full time, Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4pm

Excellent pay: £100-115/dayDOE – paid PAYE direct via Cover People.

Role
  • Supporting children in both KS1 & 2 with social & emotional or mental health difficulties (SEMH).
  • You will need to look out for triggers and employ preventative strategies and de-escalation techniques to help manage behaviour so that the pupil can focus on learning.
  • Tailored support in lessons, breaking down instructions and tasks so they are easily understood and the pupil feels they are achievable.
  • Providing lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement.
  • Working closely with the teacher, management, support staff, parents and outside professionals.
  • Contribute to a safe, positive, inclusive and collaborative work environment.
School
  • Primary school in south Manchester for children with SEMH needs.
  • Prides itself on being welcoming, collaborative and providing a balanced and full curriculum.
  • They challenge all learners whatever level or need to become independent while developing a sense of responsibility and community.
  • Partner very closely with parents to aid attendance and learning outcomes.
  • Will support long term supply staff with training and development just as they would with permanent staff.

Requirements
  • CV with full history from education to present.
  • Right to Work & Proof of Address in the UK.
  • DBS certificate on the Update Service (or be happy to apply for a new one).
  • Min of 2 professional references.
  • Overseas Police Check if applicable.
  • Some experience supporting primary aged children with social or emotional needs.
