Job summary

Balfour Beatty Power T&D in Leeds is seeking a Primary Plant Design Engineer to engineer HV primary designs for electrical substations up to 400kV. The role encompasses planning, procurement and delivery for substation projects.

You will design to standards, prepare drawings, and contribute to installation and commissioning packages, coordinating with teams to meet project schedules. Hybrid working with a comprehensive benefits package is provided.

Qualifications

• BEng/BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering or higher (preferable).
• Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and related components.
• Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs.
• Experience with AC/DC supplies in substation environments (batteries, diesel generators, DNO supplies, ET).
• Microsoft Office proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Ensure duties follow Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Procedures and Business Process Manual.
• Take ownership of technical development to ensure continuous improvement.
• Undertake work to a technical standard and self-check within delivery timescales.
• Coordinate requirements with Project Manager, customers, suppliers and other departments at contract award.
• Prepare drawings/models and perform design checks for customer interfaces.

About the role

Balfour Beatty Power T&D are currently recruiting a Primary Plant Design Engineer to work within Substation Design. This role will be based in our Leeds office.

The main function of the role is to engineer the HV Primary Engineering designs for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV.

The role also includes the General, Planning and Procurement responsibilities as detailed below for delivery of substation projects.

What you'll be doing

General Responsibilities:

• Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with standard Company Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Procedures and Business Process Manual
• Take personal ownership of technical development of your skills and duties to ensure continuous
• improvement.
• Undertake works to a degree of technical standard, and assurance, consistently and with thorough self checking of works, within the delivery timescales for activities.

Planning Responsibilities:

• Upon contract award, liaise and co-ordinate contract requirements with Project Manager, customer,external suppliers and other Balfour Beatty Departments at earliest opportunity.
• Effectively control, update and report on workload progress, giving estimates to complete and highlight potential delivery problems and solutions to Principal Primary Plant Engineer (PPPE) / Senior Primary, Plant Engineer (SPPE) as appropriate.

Design Responsibilities:

• Identify all relevant standards and Customer requirements, ensuring compliance with relevant National/ International Standards and legislation, and contract specification
• Design work to be undertaken with due regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures and production of Designer Risk Assessments, as necessary, to fulfil the Company’s obligations incompliance with current CDM regulations.
• Attend and contribute to Design Reviews / Construction Support / Contract Close-out Meetings,ensuring that appropriate items are actioned in a timely manner.
• Liaise with other Designers and Technicians on calculations and drawings requirements. (includingSuppliers).
• Initiate the preparation of all required drawings / models and perform design check of drawing contents to be submitted for customer / sub-contractor interface.
• In conjunction with other Balfour Beatty teams, prepare installation and commissioning packages, in a timely manner as dictated by the Site Installation & Commissioning Schedule.

Who we're looking for

Education:

• BENg/BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering or higher. BENg/BSc (Hons) preferable
• Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated powersystem components.
• Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs.
• Microsoft Office Packages.
• Experience with AC / DC supplies on substation environments, such as Batterysystems, diesel generators, DNO supplies, ET, other.
