Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution in Derby is seeking a Principal Design Engineer - Foundations to lead foundation and geotechnical design across OHL, cabling and substation projects.   • Experience supervising sub-consultants or subcontractors.
  • Proven experience in the design of civil engineering works and geotechnical engineering works.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake design and co-ordination of foundation and geotechnical designs for OHL, cabling and substation projects from feasibility to detail design and delivery.

About the role

Balfour Beatty Power T&D are looking for a Principal Design Engineer - Foundations, to join their team in Derby.

Role Purpose

Lead the delivery of Foundation design workstream and support the project team, designers and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives.

Take responsibility for the design delivery and design suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects with particular focus and experience on foundation design and structural concrete.

Provide advice as to the constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works designs for Power T&D business.

The role will require collaborating with the other design teams such as the Geotechnical & Geo-Environmental team, OHL team, Structures team, Drainage and Highways team, Construction team and other important stakeholders across the PT&D business.

This role could be suitable for candidates with a broad range of civil engineering and foundation design experience and expertise.

What you'll be doing

Key Accountabilities:

  • To undertake the design and co-ordination of foundation and geotechnical designs required on OHL, Cabling and Substation projects, from the initial feasibility assessment, through development to detail design & delivery phase and scheme close ensuring completion in accordance with programme, cost and quality requirements, including where appropriate, preparation or support of in-house temporary works design.
  • Ensure the timely and quality delivery of designs. Preparation of reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical level which are compliant with the required client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).

Key Responsibilities:

To assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project. Including:

  • Undertake Qualitative Risk Assessment (QRA) for OHL foundations, including geotechnical desktop assessments, foundation capacity checks and geotechnical risk assessments including the interpretation of ground investigation information.
  • Produce and lead foundation designs, foundation selection report, foundation intrusive specifications, piling specifications, pile test specifications.
  • Specify ground investigation and testing, piling works and other works.
  • Provide on site assessment of geological conditions resulting in design decisions for applicable engineering solutions
  • Support the provision of designs, volumes and quantities as required for tender submissions such that upon contract award, the budget, programme and specification can be achieved.
  • Attend testing and undertake supervision of installation as required to verify the suitability of design and quality of construction.
  • Undertake design of OHL foundations (pad, raft, pile & pile cap) including the provision of reinforcement.
  • Working closely with Project Teams to determine and maintain common objectives and to ensure work undertaken is appropriate and in accordance with project priorities.
  • Liaise with appropriate personnel to achieve optimum installation procedures. Undertake site visits as necessary to plan and inspect foundation or geotechnical works.
  • Embed "Safety by Design" principles in all activities, including managing safety through appropriate life cycle designs that minimise risks to personnel and property, by ensuring that Health & Safety Regulations and Balfour Beatty procedures and requirements are followed in the design of foundation or geotechnical works.
  • Analyse contract documents to ensure correct interpretation of customers/consultant’s intentions.
  • Design foundations and/or geotechnical works so that they may be supplied and constructed in accordance with contract documents and/or current practices.
  • Correspond as directed with the Business Units, customer, consultant, vendor (sub-contractor) to ensure the achievement of satisfactory progress and quality. Visit sites and offices to discuss and solve problem issues, as appropriate.
  • Assist in training of new designers and/or trainees.
  • Undertake other such duties as may be required by the Design lead or Design Manager.
  • Maintain compliance of CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of designs output by the team.
Who we're looking for

Skills Required:

  • Familiar with National Grid (NG) and Scottish and Southern Energy Network (SSEN) technical specifications.
  • Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil engineering and/or geotechnical engineering.
  • Professional membership with either the ICE or Geol Soc & working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Strong, proven post-graduate experience in the civil engineering industry
  • Experience of the supervision of sub-consultants or subcontractors
  • Proven experience of the design of civil engineering works
  • Strong, proven experience of the management of design of civil or geotechnical engineering works
  • IT Literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD)
  • Extensive experience of geotechnical design
