Job summary

Academics is seeking a dedicated Primary Mental Health Assistant for a welcoming primary school in Cheltenham. You will support pupils with SEMH needs and additional learning needs, helping them feel safe and engaged in lessons during 8:30am–3:30pm, with a daily rate of £90–£100 depending on experience.

This role focuses on one-to-one and small-group support, behavior management, and collaboration with teachers and SEN staff to tailor support for individual pupils.

Qualifications

• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
• Right to work in the UK
• A patient, resilient and empathetic approach
• Confidence supporting children with SEN, SEMH or behavioural needs
• Strong communication skills and ability to build rapport quickly
• Genuine interest in mental health, psychology, or child development

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 support to help pupils regulate emotions and remain focused during lessons
• Deliver small group interventions to build social skills, confidence and resilience
• Use behaviour management strategies to de-escalate challenging situations calmly
• Support children who may feel anxious, overwhelmed, or struggle to engage in the classroom
• Work closely with teachers, SEN staff, and external professionals to support individual needs
• Build strong, trusting relationships to help pupils feel secure and understood
