Job summary

Gooch & Housego, a world leader in optical design and manufacturing, invites applications for a skilled CNC Milling Operator with programming experience to join our manufacturing team in Ilminster, Somerset, UK. You will set up, program, and operate multi-axis CNC milling machines, interpret drawings, select tools, and ensure high-precision components meet specifications.

Qualifications

Proven experience as a CNC Milling Operator.
Strong CNC programming experience (G-code and CAM).
Ability to read engineering drawings and tolerances.
Experience with materials such as aluminium, steel, stainless steel, plastics.
Competent with measuring tools (verniers, micrometers, CMMs).
Good problem-solving and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

Set up, program, and operate CNC milling machines (3-axis / 4-axis / 5-axis).
Write, edit, and optimise CNC programs using G-code and CAM software.
Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
Select appropriate tools, fixtures, and materials for each job.
Perform first-off inspections and in-process quality checks using measuring equipment.
Adjust programs and machine settings to improve accuracy, efficiency, and cycle times.
Carry out routine machine maintenance and troubleshooting.
Work closely with engineering, quality, and production teams to meet deadlines.
Ensure all work complies with health & safety and quality standards.
