Job summary

Morris House Group Practice in London seeks an enthusiastic Practice Nurse to join our supportive primary care team. You will work autonomously as our main nurse, delivering core nursing services and supporting the safe, well-organised delivery of nursing care across the practice.

You will lead routine clinics, screen cervical samples, vaccinate patients, provide travel health advice, and manage injections, health checks and phlebotomy within your competency. Collaborative teamwork is essential.

Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and patient-centred Practice Nurse / General Practice Nurse to join our friendly and supportive primary care team.

This role would suit a Practice Nurse who is trained and confident delivering core general practice nursing services and is ready to work autonomously as part of a multidisciplinary general practice team.

The successful candidate will be the practices main nurse and will therefore play an important role in supporting the safe, effective and well-organised delivery of nursing services across the practice. The role does not require independent prescribing or advanced nurse practitioner qualifications but as the practices only nurse, would need to have the ability to deliver core nursing provision autonomously.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide a range of general practice nursing services, including cervical screening, childhood immunisations, adult immunisations, travel vaccinations, wound care and dressings, B12 injections, other injections under appropriate PGDs or PSDs, health checks, phlebotomy where appropriate, and support for long-term condition reviews within their competency.

As the practices nurse, the postholder will also support key nursing processes, including recall systems, vaccine ordering and stock management, cold-chain monitoring, infection prevention and control, nursing protocols, clinical audits and quality improvement work.

The successful candidate will work closely with the GP partners, Practice Manager, pharmacists, ACPs, HCAs, care coordinators, administrative colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team. They will be expected to work within their own professional competency, elevate appropriately where clinical issues fall outside their scope of practice, and contribute to the ongoing development of safe and effective nursing services for our patients.

Depending on experience, the successful candidate may also have the opportunity to act as the practices Safeguarding Lead, working with the GP partners, Practice Manager and wider team to support safeguarding processes, training, escalation and liaison with external agencies.

Morris House is situated in Tottenham in a large, modern and airy purpose-built Medical Centre, which we share with district nurses, community physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologists, tissue-viability nurses and a sexual health clinic. Our practice has a very strong teaching ethos. We train GP registrars, medical students, physician associates and foundation year 2 doctors among others. We have close links with Kings Medical School and the St Georges Physician Associate teaching programme. We provide training to GP trainees from the Enfield and Haringey VTS and Foundation Year 2 doctors from the North Middlesex Hospital rotation programme.

We perform the full range of clinical roles that you would expect in primary care. In addition, we offer high-level minor surgery and specialist tongue tie release services. We have diabetes, learning disability and spirometry clinics. We offer a range of face-to-face and telephone appointments.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will provide high-quality core general practice nursing services and will be ready to work autonomously as part of the wider General Practice team. The role does not require independent prescribing, advanced nurse practitioner qualifications or routine minor illness management.

Clinical Nursing Responsibilities

• Running routine general practice nursing clinics.
• Undertaking cervical screening
• Delivering childhood immunisations in line with the national immunisation schedule.
• Delivering adult and seasonal vaccination programmes.
• Providing travel health advice and travel vaccinations in line with training, competency and appropriate PGDs or PSDs.
• Providing wound care, dressings and suture or clip removal.
• Administering B12 injections and other injections under appropriate PGDs or PSDs.
• Administering hormonal or oncology-related injections where directed by secondary care and where appropriate training, governance and authorisation are in place.
• Undertaking health checks and lifestyle advice.
• Undertaking phlebotomy where appropriate.
• Supporting long-term condition reviews within competency.
• Recognising acutely unwell patients and escalating appropriately.
• Discussing clinical concerns with the GP partners, duty clinician, ACPs or wider clinical team where matters fall outside the postholders scope of practice.
• Maintaining accurate, timely and appropriately coded clinical records.

Lead Nurse Responsibilities

• Taking a lead role in the delivery and monitoring of childhood immunisations.
• Taking a lead role in adult, seasonal and travel vaccination programmes.
• Supporting achievement of cervical screening, immunisation and other relevant practice targets.
• Supporting safe vaccine ordering, storage, stock rotation and stock control.
• Supporting cold-chain monitoring and escalation processes.
