Job summary

Rail Delivery Group is seeking a proactive PR Executive to support consumer PR activity, media relations and press office tasks. You will help plan and evaluate campaigns that raise awareness for Railcard and rail travel, building strong media relationships and delivering compelling content.

The role involves developing annual PR plans, managing enquiries, writing releases, and reporting on campaign performance. A proven track record in consumer PR and a passion for communications are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Develop media relationships and pitch stories to journalists to secure coverage across print, broadcast and online.
  • Research and write press releases, media pitches, briefing documents, Q&A and other campaign content.
  • Monitor the media landscape to identify trends and opportunities and track coverage for reputational issues.
  • Capture and evaluate press coverage, producing monthly reporting against KPIs for awareness and commercial targets.
  • Support management of media enquiries and interview requests with timely responses.
  • Collaborate with agencies and internal teams to align PR activity with wider marketing objectives.

What is the purpose of this job?

We're looking for a creative, proactive and organised PR Executive to support the delivery of consumer PR activity for Rail Delivery Group. Working closely with the Consumer PR Manager and wider PR and Marketing team, you'll help plan, deliver and evaluate PR campaigns and press office activity that support National Rail, Railcard and the rail industry’s national marketing objectives.

You’ll develop compelling PR content, build relationships with media contacts, support proactive and reactive PR activity, manage media enquiries, and monitor coverage, industry trends and potential reputational issues. You’ll also track and report on campaign performance, using insights to help optimise activity and demonstrate results.

Working collaboratively with colleagues and agency partners, you’ll help deliver integrated campaigns that increase the mental availability and consideration of rail travel, inspire more people to choose the train, enhance the reputation of the rail industry, and drive awareness, consideration and commercial results for Railcard and other marketing initiatives.

What can I expect to do in this job?

  • Support the Consumer PR Manager to develop and deliver the annual consumer PR plans for the rail industry’s National Marketing activity, Railcard marketing and other marketing projects.
  • Deliver always‑on press office activity and support the planning and execution of upweighted PR campaigns, working closely with the PR Manager and wider PR and Marketing teams.
  • Develop media relationships and cultivate new contacts within consumer media and pitchtojournalists to achieve quality positive placements in print,broadcastand online media.
  • Research and write press releases, media pitches, inspirational content, customer communications, internal commscopy, briefing documents, Q&A and other campaign content.
  • Monitor the media landscape to identify relevant news, trends and opportunities, and track coverage to identify potential reputational issues.
  • Capture and evaluate all press coverage, producing monthlyreporting of PR activity performance against agreed KPIs for awareness, consideration and commercial targets.
  • Support the management of media enquiries and interview requests, ensuring timely and accurate responses.

Collaborate with agencies and internal teams to align PR activity with wider marketing objectives and industry‑wide campaigns.

  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with journalists and media contacts with an existing network of relevant consumer media contacts, pitching stories and securing coverage across print, broadcast and online channels.
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape and the ability to identify relevant news, trends and opportunities.
  • Experience monitoring and evaluating media coverage and producing reports against agreed objectives and KPIs.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, high-quality work.
  • Proactive and solutions‑focused, with the confidence to take ownership of tasks and identify opportunities to improve results.

  • Understanding of the rail, transport or travel sector.
  • Experience managing budgets, raising purchase orders and processing invoices.
  • Membership of, or interest in, professional communications bodies such as the CIPR.
  • An enthusiastic, proactive self‑starter who is keen to develop their PR expertise and contribute to the continued growth and success of the PR function.
