Job summary

Royal Mail in Manchester invites applications for a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed-term contract of 9 months. You’ll be based at Denton Delivery Office, working 30 hours per week on rotating shifts, including weekends, with 9am-3:30pm or 2pm-8pm slots, and Sundays at Manchester Central Delivery Office.

You will sort, deliver letters and parcels by van and on foot, build relationships with customers, and work outdoors in all weather.

Qualifications

• Full manual UK driving licence required.
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van and pass a driving assessment.
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs/hills, and lifting 10kg+ mailbags.

Job type: Fixed Term contract (9 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available. Working hours: 30:00 hours per week - working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday - 9am-3:30pm or 2pm-8pm*

You will work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You will be required to work Sundays at Manchester Central Delivery Office.

What to expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About you

We'll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You will need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
