An established industry player is looking for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join their innovative team in Oxford. This exciting role involves developing a cutting-edge bioreactor system utilizing SimCells to convert waste from cultured meat processes into vital nutrients. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead independent research, contribute to groundbreaking projects, and support sustainable production in the field of engineering biology. This position not only offers a chance to work at a prestigious institution but also to be part of a forward-thinking initiative that promotes sustainability in food production.
This position is within the University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science, located in Oxford, United Kingdom. The role is categorized under Education and requires an EU work permit.
We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to join the Oxford Centre for Tissue Engineering and Bioprocessing (OCTEB) at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Engineering Science (Headington). This fixed-term position is funded by BBSRC for two years.
The project aims to develop a simple cell (SimCell, non-dividing bacteria cell) based biocatalyst to convert waste from cultured meat processes into essential amino acids and growth factors, supporting sustainable production. The successful candidate will develop a bioreactor system where immobilized SimCells feed on mammalian cell culture waste to produce necessary nutrients.
Applicants should hold a PhD/DPhil or be near completion in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or a related field, with relevant experience. Experience in designing bioreactors for mammalian cell culture and specialized knowledge in cell encapsulation or immobilization are required. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to manage independent research, have an excellent publication record for their career stage, and contribute to new research ideas and funding opportunities.
Only online applications received before midday on 19th April 2024 will be considered. Applicants must upload a cover letter/supporting statement (including research interests and how their experience aligns with the position), CV, and the contact details of two referees.
The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, reflecting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering, and Technology.
