University of Southampton invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate to work in the George Group within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The position is funded by the Leverhulme Trust for up to three years.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry (or near completion) with strong expertise in organic synthesis, including multi-step synthesis, reaction optimisation, purification and structural characterisation.

Qualifications

  • PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or near completion.
  • Strong expertise in organic synthesis, including multi-step synthesis, reaction optimisation, purification and structural characterisation.
  • Experience in total synthesis, catalysis, photochemistry and/or mechanistic studies would be advantageous.
  • Excellent work ethic and problem solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out postdoctoral research in the George Group in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
  • Focus on biomimetic synthesis of meroterpenoids using cascade reactions inspired by biosynthetic pathways.
  • Develop new reactions based on biosynthetic intermediates and combine total synthesis with reaction discovery.
  • Present research at national and international conferences and contribute to publications.
  • Contribute to running and maintenance of the laboratory and mentor junior researchers.
