Job summary

Imperial College London invites applications for a Research Associate position to lead the development and ground-truthing of the ChemPI palaeointensity protocol. You will synthesise materials, measure throat magnetisation, and build micromagnetic models in collaboration with Imperial, Edinburgh and Oxford.

Join a NERC-funded project to apply the ChemPI method to very ancient rocks, advancing understanding of Earth's early geomagnetic field and related planetary questions.

Qualifications

• PhD in Earth Science, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or related field.
• Experience with palaeomagnetic or rock-magnetic measurement techniques.
• Experience with laboratory synthesis of materials.
• Experience with micromagnetic modelling or machine-learning approaches to magnetic data.
• Publications with first-author papers.

Responsibilities

• Develop and ground-truth the ChemPI palaeointensity protocol.
• Synthesize samples and collect natural samples; perform room-temperature magnetisation measurements.
• Develop micromagnetic models to predict CRM behaviour.
• Collaborate with Imperial, Edinburgh and Oxford; contribute to a web app.
• Apply ChemPI to 3.7-billion-year-old Isua samples.
