Job summary

The University of Southampton’s Geochemistry Research Group invites applications for a two-year Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to work on biomineralisation and palaeoclimate research, combining geochemistry, lab experiments, and in situ methods with collaborators at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

You will develop experiments on amorphous/crystalline materials, apply plasma mass spectrometry, and build a geochemical biomineralisation model to explain shell chemistry in marine

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent in geochemistry.
• Experience operating single and/or multi-collector plasma mass spectrometers.
• Experience applying geochemical tools to constraining past environmental, oceanographic, or climatic change.
• Experience in geochemical box modelling, or enthusiasm to develop these skills.
• Skills in hypothesis-testing, experiment design, data analysis and writing scientific manuscripts.

Responsibilities

• Address knowledge gaps by experimental formation and characterisation of amorphous and crystalline materials under a wide range of conditions.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the Institute of Life Sciences and utilise the cryo-EM facility.
• Develop a geochemical biomineralisation model incorporating experimental results to explain shell chemistry in marine organisms.
