Job summary

Royal Mail is recruiting a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) in Canterbury for a fixed-term 6-month contract. You will work 30 hours per week across five days, with early starts and peak-time adjustments, delivering letters and parcels by van or on foot in the local area.

You’ll be expected to work every other Sunday, handle outdoor duties in all weather, and build strong relationships with customers while maintaining timely deliveries.

Qualifications

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points).
• Ability to pass a driving assessment.
• Physically fit and able to walk long distances, lift 10 kg+ mailbags.
• Reliable and self-motivated with good organisation.
• Willingness to work weekends and holidays as required.

Job description

Location: Canterbury Delivery Office, CT1 1AA

Job type: Fixed Term contract (6 months)

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 30:00 hours per week – working (5) days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 08:30/18:00* during peak times, flexibility to work up to 21:00

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work every other Sunday at Canterbury Delivery Office, between 11:00 and 17:00

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
