Job summary

Royal Mail Reading West Delivery Office is hiring a Postie to deliver letters and parcels in Reading. This fixed-term 6-month role involves a 30-hour week on a rotating schedule, with some weekend work and overtime.

You will sort items, deliver by van and on foot, and engage with customers outdoors in all weather. Full training provided and a uniform provided; a manual UK driving licence is required.

Qualifications

• Full manual UK driving licence (no more than 6 penalty points).
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and pass a driving assessment.
• Physically fit and able to walk long distances, climb stairs/hills and lift 10kg+ mailbags.
• Reliable and self-motivated with strong organisation and resilience.
• Customer-focused and proud to deliver great service.
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently.

Location: Reading West Delivery Office, RG30 1DZ

Job type: Fixed Term contract 6 months

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.
Working hours: 30.00hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 8:30/15:00*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

What to expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily

• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About you

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
