Job summary

Royal Mail in Paignton is hiring for a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed-term 9-month contract. You will deliver letters and parcels on a rotating shift, 30 hours per week, across Monday to Sunday, in all weather, across Paignton.

You’ll need a full manual UK driving licence, be physically fit to walk long distances, and pass a driving assessment. Training and a uniform are provided, with overtime available and a supportive benefits package.

Location: Paignton Delivery Office, TQ4 5BX

Job type: Fixed Term contract 9 months

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.
Working hours: 30hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 07:30 (earliest start) hours vary dependant on duty/19:00 (latest finish) hours vary dependant on duty*

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work Sundays at Paignton Delivery Office.

What to expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About you

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
