The UK Chamber of Shipping is the trade association and voice for the UK shipping industry, with over 200 members from across the maritime sector. We work with Government, Parliament, international organisations and others to champion and protect the UK shipping industry on behalf of our members.

We are now seeking a Policy Manager (Safety) to join our Policy Department.

Overall Aim

The Policy Manager will promote safety within the UK Chamber of Shipping membership, providing strategic input on future safety policies, keeping members informed of technical and regulatory safety developments, and managing the Chamber’s position on marine planning and conservation within UK jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Chamber's expert on safety, covering technical, process, equipment and operational measures across all sectors of membership.
  • Lead and manage safety-related working groups, initiated either by membership or internally by the Policy team.
  • Represent the Chamber in the UK delegation to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) and its sub-committees and working groups (e.g. CCC, HTW, SDC, SSE, NCSR).
  • Represent the Chamber on nautical safety matters, including SOLAS and VTS remits.
  • Engage in wider maritime safety policy areas, such as the Port Marine Safety Code.
  • Attend relevant Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) committees and steering groups.
  • Collaborate with the Employment Director on occupational health and safety issues, including safety culture.
  • Act as secretary for the Safety section of the Chamber’s Safety and Environment Committee.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with key authorities and agencies such as DfT, MCA, UKHO, Trinity House, NLB, OFCOM, ICS, NI, IMarEST and RINA.

Requirements of the Policy Manager (Safety)

  • Graduate or equivalent, with a relevant professional qualification.
  • Experience in maritime safety activities.
  • Proven background in policy development and/or management.
  • Broad understanding of safety principles and technical measures.
  • Knowledge of national and international shipping policy and how government regulation is developed and influenced.
  • Awareness of key UK regulatory bodies such as the MCA and HSE.
  • Ability to quickly grasp technical issues related to shipping operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with shipping companies, analysts and senior Government officials.
  • Good social and diplomatic skills.
  • Able to forge and strengthen relationships with members, external bodies and representatives at all levels.
  • Ability to prioritise and work on own initiative.
  • Experience and qualifications in QHSE within a shipping company.
  • Experience working in or with membership organisations.
  • Operational or commercial experience in a shipping company or related sector.
  • Good presentational, time management and managing effective meetings skills.
  • 26 days annual leave (opportunity to purchase more after successful completion of probation).
  • Employer pension contributions.
  • Hybrid working (2 days at home/3 days in the office).
