Job description

Lead the Future of High Voltage Safety

The decisions made in this role will shape how thousands of people work safely on one of the UK's most critical pieces of national infrastructure.

At National Grid, safety is more than a commitment—it's the foundation of everything we do. Every switching operation, maintenance activity and network intervention depends on robust safety governance, clear standards and absolute confidence in the rules that protect our people.

We're looking for an exceptional Policy Manager – HV Safety Rules to become the technical authority responsible for the governance and evolution of National Grid's High Voltage Safety Rules framework. This is a rare opportunity to influence the future of safe working across the electricity transmission network. Your expertise will help determine how work is planned, controlled and delivered, ensuring colleagues and contractors return home safely every day while supporting the reliable operation of critical national infrastructure.

The Role

As Policy Manager – HV Safety Rules, you will lead the strategic development, governance and continuous improvement of National Grid's High Voltage Safety Rules policies and procedures. You'll be the recognised subject matter expert for HV Safety Rules, providing authoritative technical leadership across the business and ensuring our safety framework continues to reflect regulatory requirements, industry best practice and operational excellence.

Leading a specialist team, you'll shape policy, guide technical decision‑making and provide expert advice on some of the most complex and business‑critical safety matters. You'll work alongside operational leaders, engineers and senior stakeholders to embed consistent standards, influence safe behaviours and continuously improve the way work is carried out across the network.

Beyond National Grid, you'll represent the organisation with regulators, industry bodies and external partners, helping shape the future direction of High Voltage safety across the wider electricity sector. This role demands technical credibility, professional authority and the confidence to make decisions that have a lasting impact on people, performance and safety.

What You’ll Bring

You'll combine deep understanding of High Voltage safety with the leadership skills to guide policy, challenge constructively and build consensus across a complex operational environment.

Essential Requirements

  • Significant experience developing, governing or applying High Voltage Safety Rules, Policies and Procedures or equivalent Operational Safety Frameworks.

  • Demonstrable experience leading specialist technical teams and influencing senior leaders.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical requirements into clear operational standards.
