Job summary

National Grid is seeking an Asset Engineering Assurance Manager - HVDC to lead a team of specialists that provides expert engineering input and assurance across the HVDC investment lifecycle. You will ensure compliance with standards, policies and processes and drive engineering excellence.

  • Commercial awareness with procurement/support experience.

About us

We're expanding our HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) capability and building a new, dedicated team to power the Great Grid Upgrade. This is more than a job; it's a chance to play a vital role in the UK's journey to net zero by ensuring our engineering designs and quality standards are as sustainable, safe, and effective as possible.

You’ll join the Asset Engineering Assurance team who are responsible for assuring the quality of engineering work completed on all the assets on the high voltage electricity network across England and Wales. Enabling a multi-billion-pound capital plan to be technically assured, resilient against cyber threats, and enabling net zero.

National Grid is hiring for an Asset Engineering Assurance Manager - HVDC. This role can be based from either of our main base office locations accross the UK.

Job Purpose

As Asset Engineering Assurance Manager - HVDC you will lead and develop a team of technical and equipment specialists that provides expert engineering input and assurance for HVDC at all relevant stages of the investment process to ensure the delivered solutions meet the expected standards and specifications. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that the relevant engineering standards, policies and processes are aligned with the Asset Management Strategy, regulatory requirements and industry benchmarks.

What you'll do
  • Lead, inspire and develop a team of specialist HVDC engineers and technical experts, fostering a high-performance culture focused on engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Provide expert engineering assurance and technical authority across all stages of the investment process, ensuring solutions are safe, compliant, resilient and aligned to National Grid standards.
  • Act as the custodian of HVDC engineering standards, policies, design requirements and commissioning processes, ensuring they remain fit for purpose and reflective of industry developments.
  • Support the delivery of National Grid's multi-billion-pound investment programme by providing independent technical review, challenge and assurance of engineering solutions.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders, suppliers, consultants and industry bodies to develop and implement innovative, cost-effective solutions that deliver whole life value.
  • Support commercial and procurement activities through technical evaluation of tenders, supplier engagement and contractual governance processes.
  • Oversee engineering assurance activities including risk management, factory acceptance testing, design reviews and commissioning requirements.
  • Drive effective management of asset data, promoting digitalisation and continuous improvement to enhance operational efficiency and engineering insight.
  • Influence senior stakeholders across National Grid and external organisations, ensuring robust technical decision making and successful project outcomes.
About you
  • Degree qualified in an engineering discipline, or equivalent experience within a relevant technical environment.
  • Strong knowledge of HVDC technologies, transmission systems and associated engineering standards, with experience providing technical assurance to both client and supplier organisations.
  • Proven experience leading and developing diverse teams of engineering professionals within a complex, asset-intensive environment.
  • Demonstrable experience providing expert design assurance, technical governance and engineering leadership across major infrastructure or utility projects.
  • Knowledge of factory acceptance testing, commissioning requirements, asset management principles and risk management techniques.
  • Skilled at building trusted relationships and influencing senior stakeholders, both internally and externally.
  • Commercially aware, with experience supporting procurement, tender evaluation and supplier management activities.
  • A confident communicator with strong presentation skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to translate technical complexity into clear business outcomes.
  • Passionate about engineering excellence and motivated by the opportunity to play a key role in delivering the infrastructure needed for a net zero future.
What you'll get

Up to £76,000 dependent on experience.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance, a Job Requirement Car and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
