Job summary

Abingdon and Witney College seeks an experienced plumber or gas engineer to train level 3 apprentices and share expertise with colleagues at the Bicester Construction Skills Centre. The role blends practical workshops with theory, emphasizing workplace behaviours and industry standards.

You will join a small, committed team and help deliver Gas Safe qualifications alongside apprenticeship provision, in a modern, professional facility with up-to-date equipment.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to a Level 3 NVQ / Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating (e.g. City & Guilds 8202, 6189, 9289 or equivalent).
  • Significant industry experience in Plumbing/Gas trades.
  • Strong practical skills and up-to-date industry knowledge.
  • Enthusiasm for developing others and sharing professional expertise.
  • A passion for teaching the next generation of plumbing and gas trade professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver practical and theory-based training to level 3 apprentices in classrooms and workshops.
  • Support learners to develop essential workplace behaviours, including punctuality, teamwork, and effective communication.
  • Carry out training/assessments in the workplace to ensure competence and progress.
  • Contribute to a positive, professional learning environment that mirrors real-world industry standards.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain high-quality provision and learner outcomes.

Salary: Up to £54,453 per annum

Hours per week: 37

Working pattern: Monday - Thursday 7.5 hours, Friday 7 hours

Location: Bicester Campus

Contract type: Permanent

The Bicester Construction Skills Centre is designed specifically for apprentices, existing tradespeople, and employers. It offers a professional environment that feels much more like a workplace than a traditional college. Our Blue Flame Accredited Gas Centre delivers Gas Safe qualifications alongside our apprenticeship provision, supported by modern workshops, state-of-the-art equipment, and industry-standard materials.

You'll be joining a small, enthusiastic, and highly committed team that genuinely understands the industry and the skills employers value most.

Essential:

Desirable:
  • Experience teaching in a post-16 college environment.

Any successful candidates will be required to complete a structured training pathway, unless they already hold the relevant qualifications. This includes a two-week teacher induction (must be completed within probation), followed by the Award in Education and Training (AET) including Assessor is required, and then the Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher (LST) apprenticeship. Completion of this structured learning programme is expected within 3 years. Furthermore, there is the option to pursue Qualified Teacher Learning Status (QTLS).
