Job summary

Brent Council is seeking a skilled Child and Family Specialist (Play Therapy) to join the Intervention First Team. You will deliver play-based therapy to children, supported by families and schools, across settings to improve emotional wellbeing.

You will conduct assessments, develop targeted plans, and work in partnership with carers and professionals in a flexible, child-centred approach to help children build resilience and thrive.

Qualifications

• Qualified in Play Therapy or related field with professional registration or working towards it
• Strong understanding of child development, attachment, and trauma-informed practice
• Experience delivering therapeutic or play-based interventions with families
• Comfortable working in multi-agency environments
• Excellent communication, observation and reflective skills
• Ability to manage a caseload and maintain high-quality records/reports
• Commitment to safeguarding, ethics and ongoing professional development

Responsibilities

• Deliver structured and non-directive play therapy tailored to individual needs including children with SEND, neurodiversity and trauma backgrounds
• Conduct holistic assessments and develop targeted, outcome-focused intervention plans
• Collaborate with parents and carers, offering guidance to support emotional development and relationships
• Work with schools and professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team for joined-up planning
• Contribute to multi-agency meetings and provide specialist advice on play therapy and child development
• Maintain safeguarding, recording and professional practice standards
• Support service development and continuous improvement of therapeutic offers

Education

Play Therapy-related qualification (Play Therapy / Therapeutic Play / Child Psychotherapy) with registration or accreditation (or working towards it)

Child development, attachment theory, trauma-informed practice

Experience delivering therapeutic / play-based interventions with families

Multi-agency working

Communication, observation, reflective skills

Caseload management and high-quality records/reports

Safeguarding, ethical practice, ongoing professional development
