Marlborough Communications Limited (MCL)

Marlborough Communications Limited is a leading supplier of advanced communications, tactical intelligence and uncrewed systems to the Defence and security sectors. We provide specialist design, integration and through-life support for complex operational systems.

Role Description

MCL is seeking an experienced Platform Support & Installation Engineer primarily to support complex RF and electronic systems on UK maritime platforms. The role covers installation, integration, testing, fault diagnosis, repair and in-service support, along with the planning and coordination of deployments. The successful candidate will deputise for the project technical lead when required and undertake regular deployments from approximately 1-10 days to UK customer, dockyard and naval sites.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for naval communications sensing systems (CESM) and associated RF, electrical and electronic equipment on UK naval platforms.
  • Undertake installation, integration, inspection, commissioning, functional testing and acceptance support for equipment and associated cabling, interfaces and ancillary systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment, modules, interface and system-level faults through repair, replacement, modification or escalation as appropriate.
  • Undertake planned and reactive maintenance, post-design support and in-service sustainment at MCL and customer site locations.
  • Plan and coordinate deployed support and installation activities, including resources, tooling, spares, risks, dependencies and reporting.
  • Deputise for the project technical lead when needed, acting as a focal point for technical co-ordination, work allocation, stakeholder engagement and progress management.
  • Produce, review and maintain clear engineering documentation, including installation instructions, test procedures, fault and repair reports, technical reports, configuration records, task briefings and technical evidence.
  • Ensure work is conducted in accordance with approved procedures, configuration control, security requirements, quality processes and relevant electrical, RF, platform and workplace safety controls.
  • Identify and manage technical, schedule, access and delivery risks, in addition to supporting non-conformance investigations and continuous improvement as required.
  • Provide technical input to project planning, customer and supplier discussions, estimates, upgrades and other relevant MCL projects.
  • Support other MCL projects when required, particularly where RF, electronic, maritime or platform-integration experience is relevant.
  • Operate with Linux-based environments and support configuration, debugging, and command-line troubleshooting of software and hardware interfaces.

Technical Knowledge and Experience

  • Relevant defence engineering experience gained in a naval or maritime environment, military aviation, or a comparable complex technical defence environment.
  • Strong practical knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, with specialist understanding of RF systems, radio communications, electronic surveillance or electronic warfare equipment.
  • Proven experience of fault diagnosis, repair, test, maintenance, installation or integration of complex electronic systems.
  • Ability to interpret and work from engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, interface documents, test specifications, maintenance documentation and technical instructions.
  • Experience of using electronic and RF test equipment safely and correctly, with the ability to interpret results and document evidence.
  • Experience of planning and coordinating technical work, managing priorities and providing direction to colleagues or a small team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to work independently at customer sites while complying with project, quality, safety and security requirements.
  • Experience supporting Royal Navy surface or submarine platforms, naval dockyards, refit periods, trials, or platform acceptance activities.
  • Knowledge of CESM, ESM, EW, RF distribution, antenna, communications, signal-processing or mission-system equipment.
  • Familiarity with configuration management, non-conformance processes, quality assurance, concessions and acceptance evidence.
  • Familiarity with Linux command-line configuration, debugging and troubleshooting of hardware and software interfaces.
  • Experience of mentoring colleagues, supervising field activities or deputising for a technical or project lead.

Qualifications:

HNC, HND, degree, military technical training, engineering apprenticeship or equivalent demonstrable experience in electrical/electronic, RF, communications or a related engineering discipline. Professional registration, or a willingness to work towards EngTech, IEng or CEng, would be advantageous.

  • Calm, dependable and professional in operationally sensitive and time-critical defence and security environments.
  • Hands-on, methodical and safety-conscious, with strong attention to detail, a disciplined approach to fault finding, and open to learning and development.
  • Confident in making sound technical judgements while recognising when issues require escalation or specialist support.
  • Able to lead by example, coordinate others and maintain team focus, including when deployed.
  • Flexible and resilient, with the ability to adapt to changing platform access, customer priorities and programme demands.
  • Collaborative, respectful, and able to engage constructively with customers, service personnel, suppliers and colleagues.

Deployment and Working Environment:

  • This is an office based role at MCL in Redhill, combined with regular deployment to UK customer, dockyard and naval locations.
  • Must be willing to work away from home for several days, and potentially a week or more, with occasional evening, weekend or extended hours subject to programme and platform requirements.
  • Work may involve shipboard, confined or restricted-access environments, steep ladders, staging and the movement of tools and test equipment. Appointment is subject to the individual being able to undertake the role competently and safely.
  • Travel will be primarily UK based, although occasional overseas travel may arise in support of wider MCL activities.

Security and Other Requirements (Essential):

  • UK Passport and eligibility to obtain and maintain the level of UK security clearance(s) required for key projects in MCL. This position requires the ability to obtain a UK security clearance for which the Government requires UK Citizenship.
