Job summary

OnCommerce is seeking a senior leader to own and transform its engineering function across the current platform and future composable architecture. You will drive delivery, resilience, and standards while balancing live operations with platform evolution.

The role requires strong full-stack Laravel/PHP skills, API design excellence, and hands-on leadership. UK remote or hybrid work near Manchester is available, with a focus on building high-performing, accountable teams.

Qualifications

• Strong full-stack engineering background with Laravel/PHP, comfortable across monolith and microservices patterns.
• Direct experience leading an engineering transformation, restructuring teams, process, or architecture, while keeping a live, revenue-generating platform running throughout.
• Strong API design and system architecture experience.
• Production experience with MySQL, Couchbase or MongoDB, and Redis.
• GCP, deploying and operating live services at scale.

Responsibilities

• Define and enforce clear ownership boundaries across the engineering team, by domain (Buyer / Seller / Platform).
• Balance live operations with platform evolution, ensuring stability and progress.
• Own the engineering standard across current and target platform states; assess roadmaps for impact.
• Lead and develop engineering capability across squads, coach Tech Leads, foster ownership and accountability.
• Establish a two-tier resolver model for incident ownership and ensure blameless post-incident reviews.
• Embed secure coding practices and surface risk in business terms for decision-makers.
• Identify, log, and manage technical debt and escalate trade-offs for remediation.
• Translate roadmap items into scoped engineering execution and ensure delivery within architectural patterns.
